Invitation to International Activists

Our next network meeting will take place in Frankfurt/Main, Germany, from December 29, 2008, to January 1, 2009. We will offer workshops informing about the nuclear situation in different countries and do networking.

Please send an E-Mail[1] if you want to offer a workshop and if (and when) you want to come to the meeting. You can also come earlier and stay longer because we meet within the context of the "JUKSS", the Youth Environmental Congress.

The international network meeting of Anti-nuclear activists will begin on Monday, 29th of December 2008, and will end on Thursday, 1st of January 2009. We will hold (public) workshops about the nuclear situation in the different countries, which aim at larger audience from the participants of the "Youth Environmental Congress" (this is a big political meeting - not only for/of young people). We will have at least one general network meeting to talk with each other about our plans and projects in the near future and how to work together on some of the ideas. Maybe there should be further open workshops for special projects, e.g. the planned caravan information tour around the Baltic Sea to inform about radioactivity concerns, organize actions, come in contact with other activists and to take part in events of partner organizations.

Want to Offer A Workshop?

You are welcome to offer a workshop informing about nuclear issues (what is the situation? current activities? safety problems? ...) in your country. And we would happy to host a couple of other workshops on more special topics - like projects, campaigns, etc. that you are planning and where you want to invite other people to take part.

So please inform[1] us about your plans: do you want to come to our meeting in Germany? Do you want to offer information workshops or do you wish to discuss special topics/questions?

Review of the Last Network Meeting

To get an impression of the first network meeting we organized, you can have a look to the minutes of the network meeting in Bure (France).

International Network Meeting of Anti-nuclear Activists

Renewable Energies and The Nuclear Situation in Bulgaria

Renewable energy is energy that is regenerative or, for all practical purposes, virtually inexhaustible. It includes solar energy, wind energy, hydropower, biomass (derived from plants), geothermal energy (heat from the earth), and ocean energy. Renewable energy resources can supply energy for heating buildings, electricity generation, heat for industrial processes, and fuels for transportation. The increased use of renewable energy could reduce the burning of fossil fuels (coal, petroleum, and natural gas), eliminating associated air-pollution and carbon dioxide emissions, and contributing to national energy independence and economic and political security.

In Bulgaria, the Kozloduy NPP operated six pressurized water reactors with a total output of 3760 MW-electricity. Units 1 and 2 were closed in 2002 as part of the process of initiating accession to the European Union (EU), with a compensating payment of €200 million; Units 3 and 4 despite the safety upgrades, were powered down simultaneously with final accession to the EU, raising the compensation to €550 million.

Work has started on the Belene Nuclear Power Plant's two reactors for another approximately 2GW of nuclear power generation, targeted for first power in 2013. The total cost of the project is now estimated by the operator to be around €7 billion (€4 billion for the power stations plus associated infrastructure development costs).

This workshops starts on December 30, 2008, at 10:00 am in Room 10A in the 3rd floor.

Town Sign of Hanau: No Nuclear Waste!
No Nuclear Waste Repository in Hanau!

Excursion to The Nuclear Facilities Complex in Hanau

On December 31, 2008, we have the possibility to visit the former Nuclear Facilities Complex in Hanau (the linked webpage is available only in German, sorry!), about 30 kilometers away from Frankfurt/Main. At 10:00 am we will meet an activist from the Hanau Alliance Against Nuclear Waste Repository. He will tell us about the history and the former and today's meaning of this place (in English). We will see the area of the former Alkem GmbH MOX Nuclear Fuel Elements Factory, of the former Nukem GmbH Nuclear Fuel Elements Factory (today it is a nuclear service company which is also dealing with highly enriched Uranium from nuclear weapons), of the former Reaktor-Brennelement Union (RBU) producing Light Water Reactor fuel elements, of the former Transnuklear GmbH being responsible for the so-called Transnuklear Scandal, of the former Hochtemperatur-Reaktor-Brennelement GmbH High Temperature Reactor Spherical Fuel Facility, of the Nuclear Cargo + Service GmbH (NCS) being responsible among others for the Castor transports to Gorleben, of the Nukleare Transportleistungen GmbH (NTL) formerly being responsible for contaminated Castor transports and of the former Siemens Spaltstofflager Hanau's repository for fissionable materials.

All these nuclear companies have a dirty history frequently accompanied by public scandals. Today most of the companies have been closed or changed their business area. Most of the facilities have been deconstructed. An (intermediate) repository for nuclear waste remains and there are plans to build another repository. We hopefully will learn about the resistance against these nuclear companies and the activities which lead to the closure of some of these facilities. However, you will have recognized that Hanau has an importance in the current nuclear issues of Germany, too. Most anti-nuclear activists in Germany are not aware of the meaning of the NCS in context of the Castor transports or of the Nukem company which is supporting nuclear projects all-over the world. So this excursion can give all of us new experiences.

After the excursion we will sit together in Hanau to talk about what we have seen and to ask the activist from the local initiative about the nuclear facilities. We can discuss the impact of the anti-nuclear movement on the closure of some nuclear companies and about strategies to put pressure on those still operating. We will return to Frankfurt in the afternoon.

To arrive in Hanau-Wolfgang (the quarter where the nuclear complex is located) we will have to start at 9:00 am at the latest from Frankfurt. We will meet at the "Infothek" (the information point at the Youth Environmental Congress) at 8:45 am. As we have to plan the transportation to Hanau (by van or train), we need to know the number of interested people in good time. Another reason to inform us that you want to take part in this excursion is the limited number of participants (a bit above 20 people can participate). The foreign people will have priority, but we will have place for a good number of German participants, too. To sign up for this excursion please send an email[1] or ring +44 7624 1948 77 (yes, it is really a British mobile phone!). You can also spontanously tell us your interest to take part at the anti-nuclear meetings at the JUKSS, but then maybe the available number of participants has already been reached.

Baltic Sea - the most radioactive sea in the world!

Infotour Around The Baltic Sea

The Baltic Sea is the most radioactive sea in the world - thus we think it makes sense to inform about nuclear power and its risks. This Workshop is about the idea to arrange a (maybe caravan-) infotour around the Baltic Sea in summer 2010. That way we want to come in contact with local initiatives, do action, take part in information event and organize some of those events ourselves, have network meetings with local activists, spread information about nuclear issues and maybe other topics, too.

The workshop, we will hold on 1st January, 2009, from 02:00 to 04:00 pm in Room 10A in the 3rd floor, shall inform you about the idea and wants to motivate more people to take part in the organizing process of this infotour. We will talk about our ideas and what has to be done to realize this project. We would be happy to get new contacts for this issue and to meet new interested people doing it together with us.

More information about this workshop you can get from Falk[1] and via the phone number +44 7624 1948 77 (yes, it is really a British mobile phone!). There are much more international anti-nuclear workshops and meetings planned at the JUKSS - so have a look to: http://nuclear-heritage.net for more information.

On the JUKSS schedule the meeting is announced like this:
