While the snow is coming down in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, many people are arriving from all around the world to participate in this historic walk to the United Nations in New York. Our three month journey will begin on the 13th of Feb and we hope that many of you will be there to join us.(as at February)

Many things have been happening in the last few weeks and we are looking forward to an amazing start to the walk.

The Hiroshima Peace flame that was carried on the World March for Peace & Non Violence[1] has just arrived in San Fransisco from Rio de Janeiro and is now on its way to Oak Ridge, Tennessee for the beginning of the walk.

Special thanks also to Equal Exchange[2] for supplying us with Fair Trade Organic Coffee, Tea and some special chocolate treats for the walk, along with Lara Bars[3] for a generous donation and Voltaic Systems[4] for making it possible for us to have a solar pack back to charge all our gadgets on the walk.

Update (as at April 5)

Greetings everyone.

Well we are entering into the last few weeks of the walk.. Today is a rest day and there is alot of things coming up for us on the walk.. We have received an amazing amount of support along the way and it will only be a week now until we are at Three mile Island. It was the anniversary just a week ago, of the nuclear accident that happened there and it will be a very important stop on our way to the NPT. We are planning for an action and public meeting there and hope that many of you will be able to join us..

From there we will also be stopping at the Limerick Nuclear power plant near Pottstown. As momentum builds for the NPT we hope to see many of you join us for the last few days or weeks of the walk. We are also planning a big event for Fort Lee on April 30th. This event will consist of many speakers, but will also finish up with a special performance by the Olive Tree Circus.

Then it will be a last day of walking.... We are encouraging everyone to meet us at the West side of George Washington bridge at 9.30am on the 1st of May. Bring your banners, flags, clown outfits and whatever you want to express your desire for a Nuclear Free World.

The walk has received much support along the way and we have received alot of media encouraging people to participate in the events happening in New York from May 1st.

A special thanks to all those who have donated food and money to the walk, we could never have made it without your help.

With three more weeks to go we are hoping that your generosity will continue and we can make it to New York without being to much in debt.

Everyone is more than welcome to join us on the walk. If you need more information please contact us at nptwalk AT footprintsforpeace.net[5]

If everyone could please take the time to sign our petition it would be greatly appreciated:

If anyone would like to join the walk during the next 3 weeks as we walk to the United Nations please contact Footprints for Peace @ 513-313-9635

Update (as at April 2)

April 22-29, 2010 - Philadelphia to New York City
PEACE WALK for NUCLEAR ABOLITION
One week, 100 miles: Walk with us for global peace and justice!

This April 30th to May 2nd, thousands of international peace activists will converge in New York City for a historic weekend of action to end nuclear weapons, “In our lifetime!” Sponsored by the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, our Interfaith Peace Walk is mobilizing to join this major convergence in NYC and help build the movement for nuclear disarmament and abolition.

We’re seeking more walkers to join us, especially for our final week from Philadelphia to NYC! Walking long-distance with a group of diverse, committed peace activists is a powerful way to take action toward a non-violent future. We will be seen by thousands, and meet with local groups in each city we visit. It can also be a profound experience for individual walkers. With each step a prayer for peace, we create conditions for deep inner healing and transformation that will help change our world!

Interested in walking? Got QUESTIONS? We have answers!

Where’s the Peace Walk going? After leaving Philadelphia on April 22, we will walk to and stay overnight in Camden, Burlington, Trenton, Princeton, and New Brunswick, NJ, plus Staten Island, NY on our way to Manhattan, NYC.

How many people are walking? We plan to have at least 10 to 20 long-distance walkers. If more join, that’s fantastic!

How much walking per day? On average, we’ll walk about 15 miles per day, or around 6 to 8 hours.

Where will walkers sleep? In each city, friendly local faith-based communities and peace leaders will host us at no cost. Walkers should be prepared to sleep on the floor if necessary, and to wake up early with the aim of walking by 8 or 9 am.

What will walkers eat? 3 meals per day -- Generally early light breakfast, picnic lunch on the road, and evening potluck dinner, plus power snacks. Walkers with special dietary needs should be prepared to bring or purchase their own food.

Will the walk have a support vehicle? Yes -- we’ll have a spacious van with a dedicated driver to support the walk.

What should walkers bring? Needed: Comfortable shoes, clothing layers for rain or shine, sleeping bag. Suggested: A favorite musical instrument, visual peace signs or symbols, an open heart and lively spirit. Let’s do our best to travel lightly!

What’s the cost to join the walk? Each participating walker is encouraged to contribute $10 per day for food and gas expenses, or as much as you can afford. No one will be turned away from joining the walk due to lack of funds.

Can I join for just a segment of the walk? Yes! For a few steps or many miles, please join our walk for as long as you can!.
