The NukeNews are a multilingual system of newsletters made by anti-nuclear activists from several countries to inform other activists and the interested public about atomic policies and developments in their regions, about anti-nuclear campaigns and actions, and to spread the word about topics they are working on. Started in June 2011, the email newsletters are released every three months. The NukeNews are a join in project - there is no professional staff of editors, but engaged anti-nuclear people running it. The basic idea is to inform people in other countries about the developments and activities in your country or region. Thus, it is a tool for networking and for information exchange.
As long emails don't draw reader's attention, we try to keep the individual messages very short. If possible we add links to websites providing more information on the topic of the news. The Nuclear Heritage Network is an informal network of activists - due to their commitment to the cause, most of them are lacking time for more tasks. As well the NukeNews are created by volunteers informing about their activities, but actually focussing on directly fighting the atomic threat. Thus, the concept of this newsletter system suits well as short messages make it also easier to be written even by activists with lack of time due to their projects, and it will be easier for people to translate them into several languages.
The contents of the NukeNews include projects, campaigns, actions and other activities of people involved to the Nuclear Heritage Network, as well as other anti-nuclear news people feel to be important to be released to the interested audience of the NukeNews. Basically, the NukeNews are supposed to be released every three months. This is a good time frame to keep people up to date about anti-nuclear developments in other countries, and to be practicable to be provided even by very occupied activists. The NukeNews are a good chance for anti-nuclear activists to spread the word about your activities, projects and events. A number of people is already subscribed to the different language versions of the newsletter.
The tenth issue of the NukeNews have been released on July 29, 2013 - you find the different language versions on our website: Czech | English | French | Finnish | German | Lithuanian | Russian.
With NukeNews #9 we have frozen the French edition of the email newsletter. This is due to the lack of French translation support for the NukeNews. The last times only a few of the messages could be translated into French, and it doesn't make sense to send out the French edition of the newsletter mostly in English. For now, French translations - if we receive those - will be published only on this webpage until we find some French volunteers to care for the translations continuously. In the meantime the French newsletter won't be sent out anymore. If you can help, please contact us[1]

Although we do our best to provide you with helpful information, we still lack volunteers for the anti-nuclear information service. Please support this project by helping with gathering news for the NukeNews, translating or putting together the messages for the newsletter. If you could help, it would be wonderful!
- Even if a digital newsletter is not as expensive as any other printed material, it produces some costs. Your donations are welcome! We can provide you with a confirmation of your charitable donation for your tax declaration, if you send us your postal address with the transfer.
- We are looking for people gathering interesting information for the NukeNews from different countries. These pieces of text need to be prepared in English and should not exceed one paragraph - a short summary of the issue in a brief form. Contact us[1] if you can help with this task.
- And we are also looking for translation support - from English into Czech, French, Finnish, German and Russian. There are also other interpeters working with the NukeNews, thus it is no too big task and it would not be your responsibility alone to translate the messages for the newsletter. If you want to join us, send an email[1].
- We need people willing to take over responsibility for a language version of the NukeNews (Czech, English, Finnish, French, German, Russian as of today). Meaning to put together the messages in the right language and to send the newsletter with our system to the subscribers. Please volunteer by email[1], if you can help!
- New language versions of the NukeNews would be great! To establish additional NukeNews newsletter versions, it is necessary to have a robust staff of people ensuring that the translations will be made on time, and that the final version of the newsletter will be finished before the date of the release. Only one person is probably not enough to create a new language version of the NukeNews, but if you know some friends or colleagues to help with this issue, it could succeed. However, contact us[1] if you are interested in establishing an additional version of the NukeNews.
Technical information - how it works
We are collecting short (!) messages in English that people think should be published in the NukeNews using a special mailing list (translation-nukenews). Those persons who want to help to translate the news into one of the languages mentioned above have to be subscribed to the translation mailing list. They send the translations back to the listserve.
Also the coordinators of the specific language versions of the NukeNews have to be subscribed to the translation-nukenews mailing list to get the messages in the language version they are responsible for. Those messages that have been translated by the point of time agreed for releasing the NukeNews will be collected by the coordinators forming the newsletter. The finished language version of the newsletter will be sent by them to the specific NukeNews (ces-nukenews, eng-nukenews, fin-nukenews, fra-nukenews, ger-nukenews, rus-nukenews) to reach the subscribers of the newsletters.
Introduction to the translation-nukenews listserve
There are three basic functions:
- Sending contributions for the next issue of the NukeNews newsletter
- Translation of the contributions (text) into other languages
- Building the different types of language versions of the NukeNews out of the translated contributions (text pieces)
Sending contributions to the NukeNews
The NukeNews newsletter should reflect the activities of activists within the Nuclear Heritage Network. We want to inform about the topics people within the network are working on, about their projects, campaigns and events. The contributions should be sent in English to the translation-nukenews mailinglist. Each contribution (text) should be not longer than one paragraph and contain just a few sentences. There should be a headline, and it is possible to add a link to a webpage with a longer version of the article or with more information on the topic.
(It has to be in English to make it possible to be translated in the other languages. English is our working language. And it has to be short to keep the newsletter emails brief and easily readable. The subscribers can finde more information on the linked webpages if they want.)
Translation of text
Usually the contributions (articles) will be send in single emails - each email is one (short) article. Thus, it is easy to reply to the article to the list and send it back in the translated version. It makes sense to keep the subject of the email to make it easier to understand what translation is connected to what article. Basically the idea is that there would be several people doing the translation work, and they can see which articles have been translated already. So they could share the translation work. However, at the moment we have for every language version a maximum of one person willing to do the translation. That's why we are looking for more people to help with translation. French is the language that so far has no translater yet. Last time it was done by Heinz Stockinger. But this was only because of the urgent request. I guess he won't do it for the other NukeNews issues.
Building the NukeNews editions in the specific languages
For each language version there has to be one responsible person who would put the pieces of translated articles together to form the newsletter edition in the specific language. Then this will be sent by email to the specific newsletter listserve. Currently the translators have to do that, because we don't have enough people helping with the NukeNews yet. Ideally there should be additional people to share these tasks. Then all these contributions should be really small tasks and not too much for busy activists to do once every three months.
