Funding
+
Planning Process
* EU applications?
+
* the next preparation meeting will be on April 26th and 27th in Greifswald (D)
** action 1.2 Transnational Youth Initiative (possible to get up to 10,000 EUR)
+
* the most important things to be organized right now are: funding and organizing the local stops of the Tour
** action 1.1 one or several (in the different countries) Youth Exchanges (possible to get up to some tenthousands of EUR)
+
** for the funding we applied for money at the EU YOUTH IN ACTION programme - the tour project is fitting to the programme quite good and it should be possible to get enough money for it there
* support from NGOs etc?
+
** we are currently looking also for groups and people who are willing to help organizing the local stops of the tour
* autonomous fundraising (f.ex. support gigs)?
+
* currently we are working on the production of flyers, postcards and posters to distribute all over Europe (focussing on countries around the Baltic Sea but also elsewhere)
 +
** we need people to translate the invitation text into other languages and people to distribute the materials
 +
** the invitation has also to be spread to the international and local networks (e.g. mailing lists, internet forums and blogs, news portals...)
 +
** would be nice to have an advertising banner to distribute to webpages to promote the Tour - who would design it? who is willing to ask webpage operators to put them on their pages?
 +
* still unclear are the concrete means of transport for the Tour - some people like the idea of having caravans, others want a biketour or a mixture of different means (boat, train, hitchhiking, bicycle, caravans...)
 +
** we have to become clear about these things during the next months (April, May)
 +
* another tool to work on is the Baltic Sea Map project - we want to put all information about nuclear sites there; this will be helpful to inform about the issues and also to have good background information for later use

We might need lots of money!
+
* possible topics and thematic priorities are collected here: topics page
* biggest cost might be gas (see logistics: veg oil car possibility)
+
* an idea of what has to be done when will be developed on the Baltic Tour Project Timeline page
* note from original workshop in Loviisa 10.2008: First decide what you want to do, then find out how to fund it:)
+
* we also started a list of resources we will probably need for the project

EVS?

* Maybe as two persons from different countries, that are both involved in the project, who are "exchanged" (=2 paid campaign workers for 1 year)

* so people who would work on preparation of the project anyway could get some money for this time...

* we could ask a German project for support of the tour by providing the evs possibility

Logistics
+
Local Stops of The Tour
How would the tour take place?
+
At these places we will have local street actions (could be street theatre, info stalls or other type of action), gatherings with local activists and groups and information events on nuclear topics around the Baltic Sea to raise the awareness on these issues.
* With cars? other forms of transport? combinations?

* outsourcing of transport? (f.ex. to activist bus collectives)

** diesel cars can be modified to run on veg oil: could save huge gas costs! (and be green!)

*** info on internet, f.ex. http://www.journeytoforever.com

*** can be ordered from bulgaria-contact

Time?
+
The local people and groups should organize accommodation and food for the participants of the Tour; they also should make the advertising/promotion in media and for locals of the project and organize the local information events and actions. The participiants of the Tour will join the street actions, help with the events and try to participate the organizing process of these local activities. But most local organizing tasks (as room, food, advertising) will have to be done by local people.
* how many days per place?

** rest days also needed to take into account

** time per place might depend on local situation

* when will the whole tour be?

** original idea: summer 2010

** for information spreading autumn might be better (f.ex. for universities & schools)

** how long will the whole tour be?

* enjoyment, not just work! Good life on the road...

What people will participate?
+
Finally Confirmed Locations
* We need people who can drive...
+
* Åland (FIN)
* people could participate only part of the tour
+
* Belarus
* or the tour could be divided among different groups/organizations?
+
* Copenhagen (DK)

Cancelled Locations
* university towns?
+
* Kaliningrad (RUS)
* local communities affected by nuclear industry
+
* Northern Sweden
* nuclear industry locations

Who's interested in hosting the tour?

* Russian ecological NGO can arrange hosting in st petersburg & kaliningrad

* look for contacts/connections!

* murmansk PiM interested in cooperation

** maybe joint event in northern finland? (who hosts?)

What resources have we? what are we able to do? what do we want to do?

Street Actions
The kind of local action and the topics we would focus on should be suggested by the local people, because the Tour should support their work. We can than decide together if the topics and kinds of action fit to the ideas of the other participants/activists.

The range of possible actions could be from info stalls to street theatre to symbolic blockades... for example. It is very much depending on the wishes and ideas of local people and the Tour activists and what they like to do.

Preparation of the Tour

In this section we will give transparency about the status of preparation of the project.

Planning Process

  • the next preparation meeting will be on April 26th and 27th in Greifswald (D)
  • the most important things to be organized right now are: funding and organizing the local stops of the Tour
    • for the funding we applied for money at the EU YOUTH IN ACTION programme - the tour project is fitting to the programme quite good and it should be possible to get enough money for it there
    • we are currently looking also for groups and people who are willing to help organizing the local stops of the tour
  • currently we are working on the production of flyers, postcards and posters to distribute all over Europe (focussing on countries around the Baltic Sea but also elsewhere)
    • we need people to translate the invitation text into other languages and people to distribute the materials
    • the invitation has also to be spread to the international and local networks (e.g. mailing lists, internet forums and blogs, news portals...)
    • would be nice to have an advertising banner to distribute to webpages to promote the Tour - who would design it? who is willing to ask webpage operators to put them on their pages?
  • still unclear are the concrete means of transport for the Tour - some people like the idea of having caravans, others want a biketour or a mixture of different means (boat, train, hitchhiking, bicycle, caravans...)
    • we have to become clear about these things during the next months (April, May)
  • another tool to work on is the Baltic Sea Map project - we want to put all information about nuclear sites there; this will be helpful to inform about the issues and also to have good background information for later use

Local Stops of The Tour

At these places we will have local street actions (could be street theatre, info stalls or other type of action), gatherings with local activists and groups and information events on nuclear topics around the Baltic Sea to raise the awareness on these issues.

Preparation of The "Framework"

We are currently only 2-3 people who are organizing the "framework" of the whole Tour project. This is not enough, so please join us!

Preparation of the "framework" means organizing the financing, flyers, posters, advertising, coordinating dates+stuff ... - more in detail:

  • organize money for at least printing of advertising stuff (posters, flyers...), action materials, some food for the travelling time, money for travelling + maybe more if possible to get
  • write text for info materials about the Tour + to give nuclear background information; later: layout them + distribute them
  • discuss and decide the way of the Tour: where should it stop, how long to stay at certain places; which vehicles for transport?
  • make contacts with activists around the Baltic Sea and try to coordinate meetings + stops with them
  • have an overview about planned dates, money, participating people and open tasks...

Past Meetings

Resources & funding

for now, scattered information about these aspects can be found in the notes from the JUKSS workshop notes & the Stockholm meeting notes, and in the Timeline section.

A schematic overview will be constructed at the Resource List page

Content; i.e. what exactly the tour is about

Thoughts from the JUKSS workshop:

Maybe different focus in different places? (Needs coordination!)

  • scandinavia: uranium mining(!), NPP proliferation, waste storage plans, "future nuclear colonies"
    • saami, europe's only indigenous people
  • Lithuania: very dependent on NPP ignalina, green NGOs campaign for nuclear-free Lithuania
  • denmark: nuclear-free, lots of renewable energy
  • greifswald (de): example of closed plant (also Barsebäck in Swe)
  • murmansk (ru): there is a campaign (in norway?) to appeal to russian authorities to shut down power plant in murmansk region)

(See also the Nuclear Baltic Map)

Aims / topics?

  • support for affected communities
  • networking, contact
  • awareness raising & information
    • along (future) routes of nuclear material
    • about nuclear issues around the baltic sea
      • distribute map of nuclear industry activity around the baltic sea
      • the baltic sea is radioactive (MILKAS?)
      • Uranium Tails: UF6 transported over the baltic sea
    • alternatives
      • downscaling & localizing, not just "green" version of status quo
      • Knowhow & DIY info: f.ex. small-scale renewable energy
        • specialized business? (f.ex. renewable energy)
  • suggestion: Public Campaign for a Nuclear Free Baltic
    • Not only information, but give some "future" (Message: nuclear-free baltic is possible).
    • Also good countermove against the threat of scandinavia becoming a "nuclear colony"

What profile?

  • we're not "professional", or experts, just people (and that's ok!)
  • activities should be determined by local groups/people!
    • we could provide different options: seminars/workshop "packages", action, info material
