Media group Skype conference, December 8th, 2013

  • Participants: A., B. (left earlier), C., D. (joined later)
  • Facilitation: B., minutes: C.

Topics

  1. clarification of facilitation and minutes keeping
  2. preparation of next media release
  3. media strategy discussion
  4. milestones discussion
  5. preparation of next Skype conference
  6. other topics
    • "activities" list
    • media contacts / translations
    • updates & upcoming issues
    • CASE PYHÄJOKI

Next media release

  • to be published Sunday night, 15 December. The idea is to inform about developments in our projects.
  • B. suggested that people have to give their comments to media release by a certain deadline.
  • BY NPP petition won't be in it for now
  • activities that might be mentioned in the media release were discussed
    • book/database project; Case Pyhajoki and follow up; maybe results from a Greenpeace expert talk on Monday; things not yet concretely planned, e.g. info events, exhibitions (photos which were taken in Baltic Sea Info Tour); nuclear lobby events (on website); European anti-nuclear forum in Prague 29 of April 2014; events connected to Fukushima; Chernobyl events; Ostrovets NPP - Austrian researchers study flexRISK shows that most of Europe would suffer in case of catastrophy in Ostrovets; COP; nuclear updates from Finland regarding uranium mining issues (this could possibly be used for media release); anti-nuclear camp in North of Germany next summer -> these are only some of the events that are going to happen
  • translations will be made to several languages: German, Lithuanian, Latvian, Finnish, Russian; depending on results of the contiunuous Skype conference on Saturday there could be updates to be translated until Sunday

Milestones for media group

  • A.'s email on milestones should be a working document. It is preparation for media strategy, checklist. For B. it is rather long, they would shorten parts on "semi-professional style", for example. Content of media releases: clear and understandable to everyone.

Media strategy

  • stress the issue by repeating important facts; anyway, the public that we reach with media release is not necessarily informed
  • A. thinks we should not focus on one issue, because we are just starting, so it is difficult to have estimations on our impact.
  • climate issue (from D.'s email): in 2001 there was a document leaked that German nuclear industry planned to focus on this issue, anti-nuclear movement then prepared for it, and nuclear industry did it 10 years ago. So it is hard to say when which issue will be focused on. Different issues against nuclear power are focused on in different countries: waste, health, etc.
  • regarding Rosatom in Finland: pressure public bodies in Finland; Russian NGOs can be quoted as witnesses (similar could be applied in Lithuania inviting Japanese people); boss of Finnish Radiation Safety Authority moved to Rosatom: threat to democracy.

Next Skype conference

Other topics

  • The fact that the same reactor in Flamanvile and Olkiluoto is being built is not exploited enough: activists could use each other's materials, which would save them time and do coordinated actions in several countries.
  • Lithuanian, Russian, Belarussian, Estonian, Finnish media contacts were received and will be shared with the whole media group.
  • CASE PYHÄJOKI is a label for artistic reflections on nuclear impact, it is an ongoing project. It can be considered connected to the ATOMIC BALTIC network.
