---------------------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------- | ||
+ | On 28th of June first Castor shipment on Neckar river from Obrigheim | ||
+ | NPP to Neckarwestheim NPP took place - activists organized vigils, | ||
+ | rallies and protest actions, for instance an abseil action from a | ||
+ | bridge across Neckar river stopped the transport for a while. It was | ||
+ | the first time that filled Castor casks were transported by ship. | ||
+ | In total 342 high level radioactive spent fuel elements are supposed | ||
+ | to be moved to an interim site at Neckarwestheim NPP. They will be | ||
+ | assembled to 15 Castor casks, and in one transport three of them will | ||
+ | be shipped. The 2nd transport could start during the International | ||
+ | Anti-nuclear Summer Camp in Döbeln - organizers with the alliance | ||
+ | "Bündnis Neckar castorfrei" expect it to take place at the latest | ||
+ | during the week of 24th of July (after the camp), but it might | ||

Good news from South Africa ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Definitely good news came from South Africa where a high court ruled that the inter-governmental agreement with Russian Rosatom is anti-constitutional. That doesn't mean everything is over as the government is free to sign another deal if it likes. But it is still a major blow to Rosatom. Earlier (last year) Vietnam announced it will not build Russian reactors. We see deals are getting canceled even if Russians back their deals with some money. Challenges the anti-nuclear movement is facing in Sweden ---------------------------------------------------------------------- There are two major challenges the anti-nuclear movement is facing in Sweden right now, other than the numerous aspects of the ongoing struggle: 1) the so-called "main hearing" in the environmental court ("Miljödomstolen" in Swedish) dealing with the Swedish nuclear industry's application to build a spent fuel repository (the KBS-3 application), currently scheduled to take five weeks in September- October 2017, and 2) the Sunday March 4, 2018 non-binding referendum in the municipality of Östhammar on siting of a spent fuel repository at Forsmark, where the Swedish nuclear industry has applied to build their KBS-3 facility.
