----------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Good news from South Africa
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Definitely good news came from South Africa where a high court ruled
that the inter-governmental agreement with Russian Rosatom is
anti-constitutional. That doesn't mean everything is over as the
government is free to sign another deal if it likes. But it is still a
major blow to Rosatom. Earlier (last year) Vietnam announced it will
not build Russian reactors. We see deals are getting canceled even if
Russians back their deals with some money.

2. Challenges the anti-nuclear movement is facing in Sweden
----------------------------------------------------------------------
There are two major challenges the anti-nuclear movement is facing in
Sweden right now, other than the numerous aspects of the ongoing
struggle:

1) the so-called "main hearing" in the environmental court
("Miljödomstolen" in Swedish) dealing with the Swedish nuclear
industry's application to build a spent fuel repository (the KBS-3
application), currently scheduled to take five weeks in September-
October 2017, and

2) the Sunday March 4, 2018 non-binding referendum in the
municipality of Östhammar on siting of a spent fuel repository at
Forsmark, where the Swedish nuclear industry has applied to build
their KBS-3 facility.

3. Public hearing on the National Radioactive Waste Management
    Programme
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The Czech Strategic Environmental Assessment process of the update of
the National Programme on Radioactive Waste and Spent Nuclear Fuel
Management has entered its final stage.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
4. Czech government has approved a new Raw Material Policy - it opens
    the way for uranium mining
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Although the parts related to the Brzkov uranium mining proposal were
exempt from the new Czech Raw Material Policy after a public hearing
in February 2017, the policy still causes concern for locals in Brzkov
and other uranium sites regarding uranium mining in the future.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
5. The two faces of German Minister of Environment Barbara Hendricks
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The German Minister of Environment Barbara Hendricks (SPD) mentioned
during the last two years several times, that the Belgian nuclear
power plants Tihange 2 and Doel 3 are dangerous. In media she
complained about many small fissures in the nuclear reactor
containment, many critical incidents and slack Belgian nuclear
controllership. Hendricks also requested the Belgian government to
close Tihange 2. But she still permits nuclear fuel exports from
Germany to Belgian to fuel the dangerous reactors!

6. International Anti-nuclear Summer Camp will start soon
----------------------------------------------------------------------
On 17th of July the already announced summer camp will begin in
Döbeln, Germany. Some 60 participants registered from 18 countries, we
will have a number of interesting presentations, lectures, workshops
and some excursions. If you would like to spontaneously participate,
please let us know via email to "summercamp AT nuclear-heritage DOT
net" or via camp mobile phone +49 1578 9165215.

7. Neckar Castor: protests against first Castor transport by ship
----------------------------------------------------------------------
On 28th of June first Castor shipment on Neckar river from Obrigheim
NPP to Neckarwestheim NPP took place - activists organized vigils,
rallies and protest actions, for instance an abseil action from a
bridge across Neckar river stopped the transport for a while. It was
the first time that filled Castor casks were transported by ship.

In total 342 high level radioactive spent fuel elements are supposed
to be moved to an interim site at Neckarwestheim NPP. They will be
assembled to 15 Castor casks, and in one transport three of them will
be shipped. The 2nd transport could start during the International
Anti-nuclear Summer Camp in Döbeln - organizers with the alliance
"Bündnis Neckar castorfrei" expect it to take place at the latest
during the week of 24th of July (after the camp), but it might
actually happen earlier.

10. Saint Petersburg: Floating NPP
----------------------------------------------------------------------
In the center of St. Petersburg at the "Baltic Plant", two kilometers
from St. Isaac's Cathedral Rosatom is going to launch an atomic
reactor - to "test" the floating nuclear station "Akademik Lomonosov",
which is done for Chukotka. The inhabitants of St. Petersburg were not
informed. Activists anarchists and ecologist movement took out actions
in order to convey information to the citizens. Meanwhile, the
Norwegian government expressed concern about the transportation of a
floating nuclear reactor from St. Petersburg to Murmansk.
