Call for Action 2012 / Aufruf zum Aktionstag / Appel

Call for the international day against the uranium industry on 29th September 2012 (English)

Stop uranium industry – shut down uranium mining and enrichment, fuelrod production and nuclear power plants!

Even after the disastrous accident of Fukushima, nuclear power is used globally. Not just accidents in nuclear power plants are a huge threat, but already mining of uranium ore leads to contamination of big areas.

Mining of uranium does not only poison the environment, but it is also against human dignity, indigenous people are driven from their land and workers not protected against radiation – it can not be called a "clean nuclear energy".

Continuously is searched for further uranium mining sites, e.g. in Poland plans exist therefore. At many places is the resistance rising against that. Uranium mining is followed by enrichment and fuel rod production. In each step, more radioactive waste is generated, without an option how to dispose it – there is no safe disposal place existing in the world.

In addition, enrichment of uranium is a dangerous military technology, which is essential for the production of nuclear weapons.

Only a small number of companies controls the uranium industry. The biggest one, AREVA from France, owns facilities in many countries for production of electricity from nuclear source – mines, enrichment sites, fuel rod production and re-processing. Also the Russian nuclear company Rosatom has worldwide business, and URENCO (owned partial by RWE and EON) produces enriched uranium in the Netherlands, Great Britain and Germany for 25% of the global market.

Not only the temporary shut-down of all Japanese nuclear power plants has shown: We do not need electricity from nuclear plants! The electricity supply in future will be done by renewable sources, supported by efficient use and reduction of waste.

On 29th September 2012 – the day of the nuclear accident in Mayak - shall be decentral activities in many countries against the international nuclear industry. Get involved – organize an event at the next facility of the nuclear industry, in front of executive company buildings, party-offices or nuclear banks!

For the immediate stop of the nuclear industry!

Actions 2012-09-29

Germany

Döbeln

There will be a movie evening at 6 PM the project house: Uranium - Is It A Country?. And as a local sports event ("night mountain bike ride") will take place at the same time, there will be an info stall and banners next to the road.

Duisburg

The report from Duisburg:

We all know that uranium-mining and proceeding it into nuclear fuel is a serious subject. But we plannend an even funny way of bringing it into people´s mind. and indeed, we had a lot of fun and even a little succes. We have been busy for many hours to create masks of the Simpson family: Marge, Homer an Lisa. But also evil Mr. Burns was on site. you know him well: this is the guy who makes billions of dollars with the Springfield nuclear plant! In addition to that there were also a few menbers of our group dressed as DEATH an dressed as nuclear waste storage bins. This very strange party went for about two hours round on a very busy market in Duisburg Hochfeld, which is quite close to a nuclear waste plant of the german GNS-Corporation and an plant of AFN, which is corporated with the french AREVA. AFN produces here in duisburg important tube-systems for proceeding urnanium into nuclear fuel. Duisburg people have been quite astonished: first becouse the didn´t expect to meet the simpsons, the death and a few nuclear waste bins on a very sunny saturday morning. This was the funny part. They also were astonished because the didn´t really know that they live quite close to nuclear risks. This was the serious part. We brought a few hundred informationpapers about the uranium subject to them an had a lot of really good talks. After finishing this walk act an the market-place we went th the AFN-plant to give some short statements.

So far, so good. Altough we have been a small party of just 11 people we gave a few hundred people some serious thoughts.

Essen:

There was a little demonstration in front of the RWE-tower, one concern involved in Urenco and so in uranium enrichment.

Frankfurt

In Frankfurt 100 people protest on different places, so in front of the indian Consulate: [[1]]

September 29th was International Uranium Action Day, commemorating the nuclear catastrophe in Chelyabinsk, Russia on September 29th, 1955. Back then, a gigantic tank with nuclear waste exploded at Mayak Nuclear Processing Plant or “Chelyabinsk 65″, contaminating hundreds of thousands of square kilometers for centuries.

In Frankfurt on Main, central Europe’s banking capital, housing around 500 different financial institutions including the infamous European Central Bank, almost 120 activists gathered for their protest tour at 11:00h. Similar to last year’s bicycle demonstration on May 28th, 2011, a number of nuclear profiteers were targeted along a route of 12 kilometers. Young and old, citizens of various cities of the greater Rhine-Main area, folks of various ethnical backgrounds enjoyed perfect weather showing their colorful decorated vehicles.

media coverage:

Gronau

A humain chain with round about 100 Anti-Nuclear-Activists was connecting to banks "Deutsche Bank" and "Commerzbank" which finance atomic industrie. Here are some TV-Reports: [[2]].

Hungary

In the south Hungarian city Pécs in the Mecsek mountains "neMecsek Mozgalom", a local initiative against the Austrialian company Wildhorse Energy Ltd.'s reopening plans of the 1997 closed uranium mine, will join the Uranium Action Day for the first time. On the first floor of the former hotel Nádor at the central Széchenyi square an information event will take place for the public. The programme of this colorful evenings will be opened at 4.30 PM with an address of welcome by Péter Peták including the premiere of the Hungarian filmlet of the documentary "Uranium - is it a country?". Afterwards a panel discussion will follow. A Greenpeace pioneer will especially for that event travel from Australia. A map table will provide an impression which quarters of the city would be tangented to by the proposed mining area if the city parliament (currently ruled by a majority of FIDESZ). Eventually "Yellow Cakes", for 100% harmless cookies made of wheat, will be served to the visitors. Warning signs of neMecsek Mozgalom at the cookies bowls will refer to the energy content of the yellow cakes and pastries. For the younger visitors of the event the scenes of the grey reality of uranium mining will be an attraction, which was completely folded by origamis - and in contrast the friendly green looking countryside supplied by sun and wind power (house, people and animals).

Mongolia

In Mongolia was an action against uranium mining by Areva.

Archive 2008

An Uranium Action Day took place on September 20, 2008. One year after the big Uranium Conference in Germany activities were planned in many places in different countries to draw attention to the bad consequences of uranium mining and the dangers of transport of this material.

Call for action / Aufruf zum Aktionstag / Appel

Call for action (English)

European uranium action day

20th of September everywhere

Stop nuclear waste before it is produced!

A lot of countries have uranium mines and uranium factories. For example Urenco is one of the biggest multinational companies dealing with uranium. It has uranium enrichment plants in Capenhurst (GB), Almelo (NL) and in Gronau (GER). Eurodiff, a subsidiary company of the French company Areva, runs the nuclear plant in Tricastin- Pierrelatte. The recent accident in Tricastin shows how important resistance against this inhuman politics is. A substantial amount of water contaminated with uranium (the estimates vary between 75 to 360 kilograms uranium) was spilled, which necessitated the local authorities to forbid the use of drinking water.

As another example, in the beginning of 2005 the extension of the uranium enrichment facility in Gronau was authorized in spite of ongoing protests. In the Netherlands the authorization procedure for the extension of the plant in Almelo is happening now. The facility in France is getting enlarged as well; Areva holds the patents for Urenco. In the last few years the transports of uranium hexafluoride from Gronau to Russia and from France to Gronau increasingly drew international resistance.

Uranium is needed constantly for the production of fuel elements for nuclear plants (and for nuclear weapons). That is why there are regular transports of uranium across Europe and the world. The international networking against these policies needs to be strengthened, because it entails serious dangers for humans and nature. Resistance has to start at the beginning of the nuclear spiral:

Uranium mining, processing, transports and uranium enrichment/production of fuel elements.

Th spigot must be closed now and everywhere! Get active!

What can you do?

We ask everyone to organize an action on Saturday the 20th of September. We are anti-nuclear activists and initiatives from Russia, Germany, France, Finland etc. We have decided on anti-nuclear conventions in Dortmund (GER), Helsinki (FIN) and Ahaus (GER) so that we all together will set an example against uranium mining and utilization. We provide the structure for the joint protests on September the 20th.

This is how its planned:

Every local initiative or group chooses its favourite form of protest. Whatever form you prefer, a lecture, a discussion meeting, street theatre, direct action or a press conference, a demonstration or civilian committee of inspection in your local nuclear facility. There is room for new ideas, spontaneity and fantasy.

The multiple facets of the worldwide machinations of the nuclear companies are in the focus of our joint actions: Uranium mining, transports, uranium enrichment, military use of uranium etc.

You want to join?

We want to give our protest an international dimension. To get an overview over the protests taking place, it would be great if you put your initiative / planned event in the wik or send the information to info ÄT uranium-action-day.info[1]. Please don't forget to put place, time and contact dates.

Aufruf zum Aktionstag (Deutsch)

Europäischer Uran-Aktionstag

Werdet aktiv !

* Was tun?

September an.

* Deine Initiative will mitmachen?

Soyez actifs!

* Que faire?

* Ton groupe veut participer?

In Czech republic we are preparing the event in the north our country, close the town Straz pod Ralskem, where was a biggest uranium mine during the comunism, undergound mine but also "in-situ". Now is going on the clean up operation which cost every year huge money from our government budget.

With the increasing price of uranium grows also the interest of the reserves of the uranium in the unworked areas in this region. One of these is the deposit Osecna - Kotel, near by the village call same. The poeple in this region are realy active against the new mines and they did already many action in this issue... http://podjestedi.rajce.idnes.cz/ Actualy now are the interest for the mine, not just from our state enterprise DIAMO, but also from the Australian company Uran Limited.

On the 20. September, we are preparing event in the village Kotel (under the 1000 age linden-tree!). The local theatre ensemble will make a show with the message that the water sourses in this region are more important for the public that the uranium. Dr. Gavin Mudd from Australia will take part with his speach: http://civil.eng.monash.edu.au/about/staff/muddpersonal/

Hungary

It's really great to have this initiative, Uranium-Action-Day can help the otherwise isolated anti-nuclear groups all-around Europe.

We in Bátaszék(Hungary) recently are seriously endangered by a uranium mining company (WildHorse Energy ) that intend to open an ISL-mine close to our town. Unfortunatelly they found the way to the local authorities, who only see the financial side of it. Our town is hit not only directly by the nuclear industry itself but also by it's nuclear propaganda. Therefore our group tries to balance that propaganda and at the end make the local authorities hold local referendum.

In Hungary we organized several programs for the Uranium-Action-Day.

In Bátaszék there will be a little „protest festival" (A mi napunk=Our day), with many programs. It's pourpose is to draw people's attention to the hazards of having a uranium mine around us.

The brief list of the programs:

  • Greenpeace roadshow about „renewable energy resources.
  • An exhibition about the effects on environment of the Straz (Czeh Republik) uranium mine. (ENERGIA KLUB)
  • „Information tent" , that is a service of a local association (Élhető Bátaszékért Egyesület). Their pourpose is to help the people know more of the potential dangers of uranium mining.
  • A conference about the uranium mining and its impact on environment, health and tourism. The participants are the mayors of the towns and villages, that are close to the site of the mine, local civil organizations, Greenpeace, Energia Klub, and a lot of experts from different fields of related sciences.
  • Others, e.g. rock bands, karaoke, competitions, many more

In town Pécs in the Jókai Square there will be a protest against nuclear industry. Several activist will call the media and the by-passing people's attention on the problems of nuclear industry and other local environmental issues.

Rally was organised by Ecodefense and Bellona with support from other environmental groups. During the rally some 200 signatures were collected to stop nuclear waste import from URENCO and Eurodif.

Sweden

News from Per Hegelund, Kontakt him, if you are planing an action in Sweden: valiantdk ÄT yahoo.com[1]

As it happens, I'm coordinating the Swedish Antinuclear Mo9vements participation and activities in the upcoming European Social Forum 16-21 of September - so we really should do something during this international Forum in Southern Sweden, in the city of Malmö. It really is a great event with 300 different cultural activities and 250 different seminars and workshop - maybe some of you in Germany should come up for this? Malmö is quite close to Germany (and I live in Copenhagen, right across the bridge). As you can understand - I'm personally mostly concerned with anti-nuclear issues, but actually these are only a small part of the full scope of activities during ESF. I made a list of anti-nuclear events during the forum last night - and today I received a similar list from Swedish Friends of the Earth (from Tord Björk, maybe you know him?). I'll attach both, maybe they can be of some use for you... Let me know if I can help in any way.

Your you can place information about actions/activities/events of yours in your region. Please tell theme, place, time and all further information you would like to publish for others to read here.
